Cinque Terre italyOver the next few posts we will be bringing you the best of the Cinque Terre including top things to see and do (and eat!!), our personal stories of falling in love with this area and what you can do as mindful travelers to help preserve this region keeping it beautiful for generations to come.

The Cinque Terre or five lands is located along the Italian Riviera in the Liguria region.  The rugged coastline includes the villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.  These five villages and surrounding hillsides are part of the Cinque Terre National Park which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

These fishing villages were initially incredibly isolated until the train tunnels in the late 19th century connected each of the villages and beyond.  Much of the charm of the Cinque Terre is the fact that transportation here remains humble and predominantly travel is done only by train, boat and footpaths. Visitors come here for the beauty, the hiking and to just get away to experience village life.  Ironically, with the popularity and rightful attention given to the Cinque Terre the experience of village Italy and la dolce vita is becoming elusive.  As crowds descend upon these five tiny towns each year, a new challenge in finding balance is rapidly coming to a head.

Later I will explore ways each traveler can help, the best ways to enjoy this area and how transportation works. Until then sit back and enjoy the beautiful Cinque Terre.
