Arizona Firefighters Tragedy | The Power of One

The Power of One.  One pebble and a thousand ripples.  Be that pebble.  Be that One.

Arizona recently suffered a terrible tragedy with the deaths of nineteen young firefighters who were battling a blaze in the Bradshaw Mountains on June 30, 2013.  The firefighters were part of the Prescott Fire Department’s Granite Mountain Hotshots an elite squad confronting wildfires on the front line, setting up barriers to stop the spreading destruction.

One of those was a hometown boy from the nearby small town of Crown King, Arizona which is also home away from home to one of my favorite new authors, Thomasina Burke.  Thomasina had the honor of working with Tony Rose on the Crown King Fire Department for five years.  She describes him as an amazing young man who died a hero as part of the Granite Mountain Hotshot crew.  She wrote about the dangers of fighting fires in the forests around Crown King in her recently published novel, Bridge of Fire, and has decided to dedicate this book to the memory of all of those men who perished in a firestorm while trying to save the small town of Yarnell.

The tragedy is even more personal because Tony left behind his beautiful fiancee and unborn daughter.  With a heart about as big as they get, Thomasina had decided to donate all proceeds from the sales of Bridge of Fire to Tony Rose’s fiancee.

One Response to “Arizona Firefighters Tragedy | The Power of One

  • Thank you so much, Andi, for sharing this. Arizona is such a spectacular place, and we are lucky that we don’t have a lot of natural disasters such as tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes. Unfortunately, what we do have is wildland fires, and this tragedy was so enormous I am hoping that firefighting protocol is scrutinized and changed as a result. I watched Tony Rose grow from a gangly teenager, to a brave man who chose to walk into the flames and battle the flames with knowledge, strength, and courage. Thank you for sharing with your readers!
