Cinque Terre Floods: Update from Vernazza

I just heard back from one of my friends in the village.  Most everyone has returned and they are starting to dig themselves out.  She said they were determined to have the town open for next year.  All of the trails are washed out and their only connection to the world is by boat.  Below are some photos she forwarded.  Any kind words or comments will be relayed right back to them.

I put this video on youtube to try and spread the word and inspire people to help with the immediate relief efforts and restoration.

  • My thoughts and prayers are with you. Vernazza is one of the most beautiful places in the world and I look forward to returning next spring.

  • I have so many fond memories of the Cinque Terre and was devastated by the recent news.

  • Will continue to remember the local people in my thoughts and prayers.

That was such shocking news and I remember this beautiful region so fondly from our trip in 2009. Ironically we survived the Black Saturday Fires but lost our house in Marysville so know how devasting it is to come back to sheer ruin. All I can say is you have to look forward- there are moments of sheer sadnness and overwhelming frustration in cleaning up and restoring something that is so special and beautiful. Vernazza inspired us after our horrible ordeal, I hope that this little message helps to inspire you in some small way! Good luck with your rebuild.

You will overcome! Hardy people and staggeringly beautiful scenery! Good fortune!

  • In the red house on the last photo was the “il pirata caffe”.
We’ve been there just 24 hours before the flood came.
    I still can’t believe.
