Women of Inspiration Featuring Laurie Todd

I have decided to take International Women’s Day a step further and celebrate the amazing women who have come in and out of my life all month. These talented and driven ladies have all given me encouragement as I reach for my goals, and I want to honor them and hopefully through their stories touch other women and girls who are trying to follow their own dreams. I present today’s Women of Inspiration featuring Laurie Todd.

Laurie came into my life when I was fighting a medical bill of 49k for an emergency flight for my young son. I was completely overwhelmed and under educated about the insurance appeals process. Honestly, I was in the dark. Laurie helped direct me, give me courage and strength to not give up. A true warrior.

I am Laurie Todd, the Insurance Warrior. I write an fight insurance appeals when lifesaving treatments are denied.

I did not decide to pursue my dream. All that I did was to say “yes” when other desperate patients asked for help.

I won my own lifesaving appeal in 2005, had my 14-hour surgery, spent 43 days in the hospital and — after a few more weeks building up strength — travelled back to Seattle from Washington, D.C.

A few weeks after I got home, I received a call from a fellow appendix cancer patient in Philadelphia. He said, “We heard that you had a great victory. My insurance company has denied it … can you help me?” That was the specific moment when I became the Insurance Warrior.

Scariest part., 2005. I was near death from a Stage-IV abdominal cancer. All of my doctors were dead-set against me having cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC by Dr. Sugarbaker in Washington, DC. They wanted me to watch and wait and see how fast it would grow.

Then my insurance company denied it. Dr. Sugarbaker was out of network — and I had no out-of-network benefit. I began to research and write my appeal. Nobody thought that I would win. That was the scariest time.

The best part about being the Insurance Warrior is teaching my helpees how to take charge of their insurance companies. The best part is being that voice on the phone that convinces them that we are going to get through this. And the best part is when we win.

I would tell young women three things:

1. Success is not about luck — it’s about strategy.

2. We don’t have to be brave. We just have to show up.

3. All things are possible.

Thank you Laurie, your words to women couldn’t be more true. I want to include the link to two of Laurie’s books. They explain exactly how to research, write and deliver a winning appeal: www.theinsurancewarrior.com/thebookandthecd.html
